Become charmed by one of the oldest cities in Poland. Torun – an outstanding example of medieval gothic town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, called one of Seven Wonders of Poland. Appreciated by National Geographic Polska and placed on the list of 30 Most Beautiful Places in the World. Move back to medieval ages and remember to taste the best gingerbread in the world.

Start your tour in the hearth of Torun – Rynek (Main Square). In the middle of the square you will find a Gothic town hall, which houses town museum. Inside you may see rich collection of sculptures, paintings and stained glass. We strongly recommend you to climb the tower (extra paid) to admire gorgeous panorama of Torun and the Vistula river. In front of the entrance there is a bronze statue of Mikołaj Kopernik (Nicolaus Copernicus). Around the Rynek have a look at mansions of the Hansa merchants like Pod Gwiazdą or Dwór Artusa. Most of them are richly decorated and well preserved.

Just next to the Main Square you will visit the Holy Spirit’s Church and Saint Mary’s Church. The second one comes from 14th century and was founded by Franciscans. You will be charmed by genuine organ from the beginning of 16th century, medieval tombstones and colourful stained glass.

Afterwards you may admire the magnificent Saint John’s Cathedral. Some of the oldest elements of this enormous building date from the 13th century. Through the years this church was a religious centre for local community and was a witness of an important christian ceremonies – Mikołaj Kopernik was baptized here. Visiting the cathedral listen to the history of “Tuba Dei” – the biggest medieval bell in Poland from 1500.

Passing defensive walls and several towers like Sailor’s Gate or Bridge Gate you will reach ruins of the Teutonic Knights’ castle – the headquarters of the Commander on the right Vistula bank.

In the newer part of historical Torun –  Nowe Miasto you will see representative commercial residence like pharmacy with a golden lion, “Pod Modrym Fartuchem” inn. Another historical object is former church of the Holy Trinity (now functioned as a gallery) and Saint James’s Church.

Being in the Nowa Huta district of Krakow is like travelling back in time — all the way back to the communist era. The places you’ll visit on this unique tour are exactly as they were during the communist regime, in this neighbourhood built as a model communist city. See the socialist realist architecture, listen to the personal stories of the local people, and visit spots where the long fight for democracy took place.

Itinerary
This is a typical itinerary for this product

Stop At: Nowa Huta, Kraków, Poland

The journey starts with a ride on local transportation from your hotel into the heart of the former com-munist city. Nowa Huta is a time capsule of the communist ideal. The easternmost district of Krakow was designed by the soviets as a model communist city, but later became an anti-communist hub and an im-portant part of the solidarity movement.

Duration: 20 minutes

Stop At: Nowa Huta Museum, Osiedle Słoneczne 16, 31-958 Kraków, Poland

This exhibition under the Nowa Huta Museum was created not only to counter some of the myths con-nected with the shelters of this district, but also to tell visitors about the political climate of the time, the Cold War, arms race, as well as a real threat of the outbreak of World War III and how the authorities used it for propaganda.

Duration: 15 minutes

Stop At: Ronald Reagan Central Square, 30-962 Kraków, Poland

This is the calling card of the district and the area’s most notable landmark. Centrally planned right after WWII, today the square and its surrounding areas are like a museum of the many architectural styles and ideas from the past.

Stylowa restaurant at C3 Housing Estate: The oldest restaurant in the Nowa Huta district is located within walking distance of Central Square. In the past a symbol of luxury, but nowadays it is a bit vintage it remains an ideal place to drink vodka and talk about the communist past.

Duration: 25 minutes

Stop At: Nowa Huta Cross, 2 Ludźmierska, 31-953 Kraków, Poland

Nowa Huta, the first perfectly socialist town in Poland, was supposed to remain atheist. However, in 1956 the communist authorities allowed for the construction of a church. After less than two years, when the building works began, the permit was withdrawn, and it was decided that a school would be built in place of the church. In order to remove the cross that stood on the side where the church was supposed to be erected, the authorities, fearful of riots, engaged Special Forces and armored cars from the whole of southern Poland. The fear turned out to be justified, as the protest that followed on April 27, 1960 turned into a battle with the militia in which over 4000 people defended the cross. After days of struggle the cross remained in its place.

Duration: 10 minutes

Stop At: Ludowy Theatre, osiedle Teatralne 34, 31-948 Kraków, Poland

People used to say that Nowa Huta could boast two things: good steel and good theatre. However, the beginning of artistic life in Nowa Huta was not easy. When planning the new town, architects did not al-low for cultural life and they only remembered to include some infrastructure for culture in the mid-1950s. The theatre was thought to be a light and funny one for people who had no intellectual back-ground, but with time became one of the most avant-garde theatres in Krakow.

Duration: 5 minutes

Stop At: Museum of the Armed Act, osiedle Górali 23, 31-961 Kraków, Poland

Here you’ll get the chance to take some photos of a real Russian tank left in Nowa Huta after the war, and to learn about the huge protection system invented by the communist architects.

Duration: 5 minutes

Stop At: Bieńczyce, Kraków, Poland

We’ll explore a small market where the locals spend their time socialising, buying basic groceries, or sell-ing second-hand clothes and homemade sweets. This is a great place to rest, and maybe test out your Polish language skills among the locals.

Duration: 10 minutes

Stop At: Church of Our Lady Queen of Poland, ul. Obroncow Krzyza 1, Krakow 31-831 Poland

We’ll spend some time visiting a huge church known as the Lord’s Ark, which became a symbol of the long fight for freedom and democracy. The church was built by residents completely by hand.
